Goodbye Summer, Hello Autumn

Autumn is a time of year I dread and look forward to in equal measures. On the one hand it's time to bring out the warm jumpers, ankle boots and dark lipstick which are a few of my favourite things fashion and beauty wise. On the other hand the nights get longer and the days get colder. As I sit here in my favourite cafe near where I live I'm reflecting on the summer that's just gone. I'm always happier in the warmer months and this summer in particular is going to be really hard for me to say goodbye to.

My friend Lia shared a post on her Instagram a few days ago about losing friends. It was a poem by Rupi Kaur called "The Underrated Heartache". From what I can tell the poem isn't about experiencing a death of a friend, but the loss of them after a falling out or after a distance creeps in. It's common and is something I've experienced before, but it's not something we talk about all that often.

People sometimes underestimate the profound impact they have on other people's lives. When someone you've been so close to becomes almost a stranger to you it's a difficult feeling to deal with. It takes an awful lot for me to let someone into my life, whether that be a prospective partner or friend and I find the loss of these people impacts me greatly. I'm a sucker for reminiscing and I have a tendency to live in the past a bit. This means I tend to dwell a lot on "what could have been" which is a really dangerous mindset to get into.

This Autumn has come at the perfect time for me. I see it as a season of new beginnings and whilst this summer was a special one for me I'm uncharacteristically looking forward to what the latter part of this year has to offer. I see Autumn as a season of getting rid of the old to make way for the new and I'm all about embracing that at the moment.

I plan on spending the next few months surrounding myself with close friends. The kind that have stuck around and always will. I'm so lucky I have people in my life who support me and encourage me to be happy and to be honest, if it wasn't for these people over the last few months I'd really have struggled.

If you're going through a "friend break up" or a break up of any kind try and remember what's meant to be will be. If someone has left your life it's either because they weren't supposed to be in it at all, or because they weren't supposed to be in it right now. If you're worried about letting go of summer and heading into the colder months try and embrace the new beginnings that Autumn has to offer.
